What Is Microneedling

What Is
Microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure that involves creating tiny punctures in the skin using a device with fine needles. This process stimulates the body’s natural healing response, increasing collagen and elastin production. Microneedling treatments can address many skin concerns, including:

Our Advanced Technique: Microneedling
With PRP

Microneedling with PRP, also known as a vampire facial, is a cutting-edge treatment that uses the patient’s PRP, extracted from their blood, to enhance the appearance of the skin, promoting a natural and youthful glow. During this procedure, a small amount of blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge machine to separate PRP from other components. The purified and concentrated PRP is then applied to the face and absorbed through tiny injuries created by a microneedling device. This procedure triggers the body’s natural healing process, improving the overall texture and tone of the skin. It helps stimulate collagen production and regeneration.

How Does Microneedling Differ From Other Skin Treatments

How Does Microneedling Differ From Other Skin Treatments?

Microneedling, chemical peels, laser resurfacing, and dermabrasion are popular procedures for improving skin texture and addressing cosmetic concerns. However, they differ in how they work and the results they offer. Unlike chemical peels, which use exfoliating acids to remove dead skin cells and reveal fresher layers, microneedling creates tiny punctures to intensify collagen and elastin production. This deeper stimulation produces more long-lasting results, particularly for fine lines, acne scars, and overall skin tone.

Compared to laser resurfacing, which uses focused light to remove or treat damaged skin layers, microneedling is a less aggressive option with a faster recovery time. While laser resurfacing can provide more dramatic results, especially for severe skin issues, it may come with more extended downtime and a higher risk of complications, particularly for individuals with darker skin tones. Dermabrasion, which involves physically removing the outer layers of skin using a rotating tool, is also more invasive than microneedling and requires a longer healing period.

Consultation & Preparation for Microneedling

Before receiving microneedling, a consultation should be scheduled to determine if it is appropriate for the patient’s skin concerns. During this appointment, we assess the patient’s medical history for conditions like bleeding disorders that could interfere with treatment or increase risks. Our aestheticians may also analyze the skin to decide on the proper applicator, depth settings, and how many microneedling sessions will be needed.

In preparation for the procedure, we recommend stopping using any irritating skincare products a few days beforehand. The patient should arrive with a clean face free of makeup, sunscreen, or other topical products so the needles can easily penetrate the skin.

The skin is cleaned with an antiseptic, and a topical numbing cream may be applied to minimize discomfort during the procedure. The patient is seated comfortably in a reclining chair.

A specialized device with tiny needles (a derma roller or a motorized pen-like instrument) is gently rolled or pressed onto the treatment area. The needles create small punctures, triggering the skin’s natural healing response.

The micro-injuries stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, proteins that contribute to the skin’s structure and elasticity. They help improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scars.
Microneedling enhances the absorption of PRP and topical skincare products, as the microchannels created during the procedure allow for better penetration. PRP can enter deeper layers of facial tissues to achieve more significant skin rejuvenation. Patients may undergo microneedling without PRP, which is also effective.
After treatment, the skin usually looks red, similar to a mild sunburn. Some individuals may experience slight swelling or minor pinpoint bleeding. Patients are advised to follow specific post-treatment care instructions provided by our aestheticians.
The entire procedure is performed multiple times to achieve the desired results. Patients usually need 4-6 microneedling sessions to address mild cosmetic concerns and restore youthful skin. More complex issues, such as acne scars and stretch marks, require 6-8 treatments.

Recovery & Aftercare

The initial symptoms, such as redness and swelling, subside within a few hours after the procedure. The treated area may feel warm, tight, itchy, or mildly sunburned for 24-48 hours as the natural skin repair process continues. Cool compresses can provide comfort during this time.

Within 3 days after microneedling, patients typically notice dryness and mild peeling or flaking. Gentle facial cleansers and thick moisturizers should keep the skin hydrated. Avoid active ingredients, like retinol, benzoyl peroxide, alpha hydroxy acids, and others, until the tissues fully heal, usually by day 5 post-treatment.

Sun protection is vital during recovery, as the skin remains highly vulnerable to UV damage. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 (or higher) sunscreen should be applied daily. Most patients can return to regular skincare products and makeup routines within a week. Results of new collagen formation will begin to show in a month.
When microneedling is combined with PRP, there are additional benefits and considerations during the healing period. The concentrated growth factors in PRP can amplify and accelerate the skin’s natural renewal. Patients may be advised to avoid strenuous activity for up to 48 hours post-treatment to allow growth factors time to activate. Recovery is similar but progresses slightly faster with PRP.
